On Friday January 13th the Tennessee Technology Center at McKenzie's Green Technology class has gone online with Solar. The school's 3K array will now be producing power and selling it back to TVA.

Fall 2011 Awards Day

The Fall Trimester at the Tennessee Technology Center at McKenzie ended with Awards Day on December 15th. The ceremony, organized and sponsored by the campus-wide Student Senate, was held at the McKenzie Cumberland Presbyterian Church and led by the Center’s Assistant Director Danny Hudson.

A total of 45 students received their diplomas or final certificates and numerous others were recognized for completing certificate levels during the fall 2011 Trimester. Also recognized during the ceremony were students who were inducted into the National Technical Honor Society, and students who attained Perfect Attendance.

Coat Drive

The McKenzie Technology Center Student Senate hosted a new and used coat drive for the upcoming winter months. Over 140 new and used coats were donated to the United Neighbors of Carroll County program to be given to residents in the area. “The coat drive idea came from our students wanting to make sure that area residents had adequate clothing for the winter” said Student Senate President Debbie Keylon, student at the McKenzie Technology Center. The coat drive is just one of the many charitable programs the Student Senate hosts throughout the year.

Dailey Named Outstanding Student of the Year

The Tennessee Technology Center at McKenzie presents Mr. TJ Dailey with the 2010 Outstanding Student of the Year Award. Mr. Dailey is a Green Electronics student from McKenzie, TN whom has been in the program for over a year and holds many qualities of a Student of the Year. He also won a Silver Medal in Electronics Technology at the State Skills USA contest in the spring of 2010. A cash prize and trip to Nashville were given to Mr. Dailey for his accomplishments on the local level. Mr. Dailey will now go on to represent TTC McKenzie at the Regional Competition in Jackson, TN in January 2011. The winner of the Regional Competition will move on to the Statewide Competition where the winner will be awarded a new automobile and will represent all 27 Tennessee Technology Centers as the Outstanding Student Ambassador for Technical Education.

Green Technology Class Tours Solar Facility

Our Green Technology Class took a tour of Sharp Electronics in Memphis TN on Wednesday the 4th of August. Sharp is a global leader in solar electricity, Sharp powers more homes and business than any other solar manufacturer worldwide. We appreciate the opportunity to be able to look at what goes into the manufacturing of solar panels.

TTC Brings Home the Gold Again

Two students at the Tennessee Technology Center at McKenzie brought home first place honors at the National Skills USA competition.

Brian Cruse of McKenzie and Steve Crawford of Paris placed first in the Sustainable Solutions event. Their Micro-Hydro display won rave reviews from the judges and fellow competitors for there creativity and craftsmanship. Both students received a $50 gift card from Lowes.

TTC McKenzie also competed in two other events at the National Competition. Mark Reed of Trenton placed fourteenth in the Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning event. Ralph Turnbow of Dresden placed sixth in the Nation in the Plumbing and Pipefitting competition.

Skills USA is a national organization serving teachers, high school, and college students who are preparing for careers in technical, skilled and service occupations, including health occupations. Skills USA programs include local, state and national competitions in which students demonstrate occupational and leadership skills. At the annual national-level Skills USA Championships, over 5,000 students competed in 87 occupational and leadership skill areas.

WIA Welding Class Graduates

A total of 14 students graduated from the Tennessee Technology Center at McKenzie evening Welding class on Thursday June 10th. The class was sponsored through a grant by the Workforce Investment Act Area 11 to help retrain dislocated workers.

Students in Welding Technology competed in the Annual AWS Section 106 student day competition held in May. Heath Bartholomew placed 1st in the Shielded Metal Arc Contest and Chad Mann placed 3rd in the Oxygen Fuel Cutting contest.

Skills USA Winners

Students at the Tennessee Technology Center at McKenzie brought home six gold, one silver and one bronze medal in the State Skills USA competitions.

The Center competed in the post-secondary division of the 45th Annual Conference in Chattanooga and received gold medals in Plumbing, HVAC (Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning), CNC Turning, CNC Milling and Sustainable Solutions. The school also placed Second in Electronics Technology and Third in Telecommunications Cabling. The competition tested students in practical skills as well as oral and written exams. All the winners will advance to the national competition in June in Kansas City, MO.

Mark Reed of Trenton earned gold in HVAC this year making three years in a row that TTC McKenzie has won first place in HVAC. Brian Cruse of Gleason and Steve Crawford of Paris placed first in the Sustainable Solutions event. They will compete in the Sustainable Energy competition at Nationals with their Micro Hydro display. Ralph Turnbow of Dresden took home the top spot in Plumbing. The Machine Tool Program brought home two gold medals with Terrell Johnson of Huntingdon winning in the CNC Turning competition and Robert Douglas of Bruceton placing first in CNC Milling. The Green Technology program was well represented with TJ Dailey of McKenzie placing 2nd in Electronics Technology, and Brian Bates of Trenton taking home the bronze medal in Telecommunications Cabling.

Instructors who will accompany the students to nationals in Kansas City are James Tucker, Bruce Moore, Darrell Roland, and Terry Wilson. “We look forward to the national competition and plan on doing very well,” Wilson said.

Have you ever said “I can’t do much because I don’t have a lot of money to give.” That is not what the students at Tennessee Technology Center at McKenzie said. The McKenzie Campus Student Senate took the attitude that every penny counts. They hosted a Penny Drive competition among classes at the McKenzie and Martin locations to raise funds for the McKenzie Family Readiness support group of our local guard unit.

The students raised $2,000 that they presented to readiness group volunteers. “This has been such a special competition among our students and faculty and we are so glad to be able to donate the money to such a worthwhile cause,” stated Melissa Franks, Student Senate President. The competitions were won by the Business Systems Technology class at McKenzie and the Industrial Maintenance Class in Martin.

Lowe's and Kobalt Tools in partnership with SkillsUSA are helping the next generation of trade professionals develop their skills at TTC/McKenzie through their Toolbox Education program. Lowe's is donating approximately $1,100 worth of kobalt tools to the school as part of the national program, which will total about $450,000 to 400 SkillsUSA Automotive service technology programs across the nation for use in their classrooms.

Green Technology Class Becomes Certified as Green Academy

The Green Technology class here at the Tennessee Technology Center at McKenzie has just earned the certification as one of the nation’s first Green Academy’s through ETA (Electronics Technicians Association). The designation comes after many hours of hard work put in by students and their instructor Bruce Moore.

Just launched, ETA International’s Green Academy will be a collaborative effort for both schools that are approved to utilize ETA alternative energy certifications and industry partners who offer training or are looking to hire students.

“We hear from schools each day who are entering the alternative energy market and including their local industry. This recognition, ‘Green Academy’ shows which schools have completed the full circle - students, training, certification and jobs,” said ETA International President, Teresa Maher

It is important for students to receive hands-on training and what better way to do that than by creating partnerships with local businesses. Students are able to receive the necessary hands-on training through internships and also receive ETA certification.

Schools and facilities who wish to become part of ETA’s Green Academy must have at least one training program approved by ETA to teach a Level One certification in one of the ETA Alternative Energy disciplines (photovoltaic, small and commercial wind, micro hydro, fuel cells, solar thermal, geothermal, Stirling technology or solar concentration). The school must also have an agreement with an employer to provide part or all of its students with either an internship or an externship. Robot Wars a Huge Success

The Tennessee Technology Center at McKenzie hosted the sixth annual Robot Wars on Friday February 19 at the center on Highland Drive.

Students from the Bio-Medical Technology and Green Electronics classes competed against students from the Technology Center at Newbern. The competition was judged by longtime electronics instructor Tom Lewis.

The contest involved two events- the first was the line follower speed event for the robots to follow around and oblong track. The robots were judged on time and accuracy. The second event was the Sumo Robot competition. This was a round robin style format where the robots tried to push their opponent off the oval track.

In the line follower category, Cody McGowan of TTC Newbern won first in total time and also Smallest design; Clint Fesmire (Green Technology) won Biggest design, Steve Crawford (Green Technology) won Best Design; Robert Forbus (Green Technology) won Most Creative with his Cadillac tractor design.

Plumbing Class Works on Habitat House

The Plumbing class at the Tennessee Technology Center at McKenzie has just completed work on plumbing for the tenth Habitat for Humanity House in Henry County. The class, under the direction of Instructor Darrel Roland, spent over 100 man hours working on the project with help from Habitat volunteer Joe Snow. “These 12 students enjoyed the opportunity to apply the trade they are learning at the same time being able to give back to such a worthwhile cause” said Roland. The Plumbing class is sponsored through a grant from the Workforce Investment Act (WIA 11) that is retraining dislocated and underemployed workers in Northwest Tennessee.

The Fall Trimester at the Tennessee Technology Center at McKenzie ended with Awards Day on December 16th. The ceremony, organized and sponsored by the campus-wide Student Senate, was held at the McKenzie Cumberland Presbyterian Church and led by the Center’s director Dr. Brad White.

The Tennessee Technology Center at McKenzie presents Mr. Steve Crawford with the 2009 Outstanding Student of the Year Award. Mr. Crawford is a Green Electronics student from Paris, TN whom has been in the program for over a year and holds many qualities of a Student of the Year. He was also named State and National Skills USA Alternative Energy winner in the summer of 2009. A cash prize and trip to Nashville were given to Mr. Crawford for his accomplishments on the local level. Mr. Crawford will now go on to represent TTC McKenzie at the Regional Competition in Jackson, TN in January. The winner of the Regional Competition will move on to the Statewide Competition where the winner will be awarded a new automobile and will represent all 27 Tennessee Technology Centers as the Outstanding Student Ambassador for Technical Education.

Students Win at Nationals

Two students at the Tennessee Technology Center at McKenzie brought home first place honors at the National Skills USA competition.

Kurt Thomas of McKenzie and Steve Crawford of Paris placed first in the Sustainable Energy event. Their HOD (Hydrogen on Demand) display won rave reviews from the judges and fellow competitors for there creativity and craftsmanship. Both students for their win received a $100 gift card, set of Kobalt tools, and one trimester of free tuition at the local center.

TTC McKenzie also competed in two other events at the National Competition. Tony Hernandez of Milan placed tenth in the Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning event he is the first postsecondary student in the history of Tennessee to place in the top ten. Jesse James of Dresden placed twenty first in the Automotive Mechanics competition.

Skills USA is a national organization serving teachers and high school and college students who are preparing for careers in technical, skilled and service occupations, including health occupations. Skills USA programs include local, state and national competitions in which students demonstrate occupational and leadership skills. At the annual national-level Skills USA Championships, over 5,000 students competed in 87 occupational and leadership skill areas.

This class went to different shops at the school and learned some new skills that will hopefully help us later in life. Some of our favorite shops were automotive, where we learned about changing tires and about the parts of cars, the nursing class where we learned about drugs and the Henry County Sherriff's Department came and talked to us. We also got to build robots and windmill generators. Also the food was great ( Thanks To The Hospital)l!!! June 17 was the best day of them all it was Fun Day for the school,and also for us we played various games such as water balloon toss and we also had a water balloon fight and then we had a Water Relay Contest which was the best of them all. And at the end of the day just about every single one of us had to go home soaked. And June 19 was the last day of the adventure and also it was the saddest day.

TTC McKenzie Bio-Medical Instructor Donald Gearin has just finished adding solar panels and a windmill to his house to help cut down on his electrical costs. Below is a story written by Joel Washburn of the McKenzie Banner about our new LPN class that starts February 2nd.

McKenzie - "When one door closes, God opens another," said Rose Hopkins of Sharon. Rose is a displaced garment worker, who along with her "older" sister Belinda, have started a yearlong course at the Tennessee Technology Center at McKenzie to become a practical nurse.

Belinda and Rose share a desk - just as they have shared many other life experiences - as they learn math and study skills from retired McKenzie teacher Martha Sue Peters. The sisters had journeyed through life at the same garment companies, each staying until the company was shuttered and the jobs dispatched overseas. First it was Salant and Salant and most recently Martin Manufacturing in Martin. Each wanted to be nurses when they left high school, but marriage, children, and earning a living precluded nursing school. Belinda is a widow of two years. She has three children and two grandchildren. Rose is married and has a 24-year-old daughter. Now the sisters are realizing their dream of going to school to be a nurse.

Nursing students are displaced workers from Fecheimer, Dana, Kimro, MIG, McKenzie Valve, and New Generations Furniture. They reside in the counties of Obion, Weakley, Henry, Carroll, and Henderson.

John Penn Ridgeway, counselor for the school, said the class, taught by Dr. Jenny Johnsonius, is provided by a one-year grant through the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development to serve the displaced workers. Each student successfully passed the entrance exam for admission into the nursing program. A total of 50 took the entrance exam, said Ridgeway. The programs at the TTC at McKenzie offer the only real hope for some adults to return to school, said Ridgeway. Nursing students will attend 7:20 a.m. to 2:55 p.m. Monday through Friday. Following the initial study skills class at McKenzie, the students will complete the course at the satellite campus in Martin.

Industries throughout the nation are reducing the workforce. The same is true for Tennessee Technology Centers throughout the state. Elizabeth Check, director of TTC-McKenzie, said the school recently reduced its workforce by one. "All technology centers are cutting back in staff while demand for the programs is increasing," said Check.

The training programs at Tennessee Technology Center at McKenzie are designed for adults who cannot take four years out of their life for a college degree, concluded Check.

Kim Cochran, co-owner of Kimro in Trezevant, is herself also in the class after her company lost its major contract with a sportswear company. Kim said her dad, Roy, is operating the company while she attends school. The mother of twin seven-year-old girls said it will difficult to get everyone dressed and off to school. The girls attend West Carroll Primary in McLemoresville and she will be traveling to Martin each day.

Kim shared a desk with Sherry Norwood of McKenzie, contemporaries at McKenzie High School in the late 1970s. Sherry worked for Kim's company in Trezevant. Sherry said the math is "coming back to her" after a 30-year absence from school. Kim and Sherry both had Mrs. Peters as a middle school teacher. Sherry is a widow, mother of six biological and stepchildren, grandmother of 11, and great-grandmother of four.

Nick Allen of McKenzie is the lone male in the classroom. At age 26, his work experience has included layoffs at three companies experiencing downsizing.

Dr. Johnsonius said the class is 1,296 hours in length.

The Fall Trimester at the Tennessee Technology Center at McKenzie ended with Awards Day on January 9. The ceremony, organized and sponsored by the campus-wide Student Senate, was held at the McKenzie Cumberland Presbyterian Church and led by the Center’s director Elizabeth Check.

A total of 32 students received there diplomas or final certificates and numerous others were recognized for completing certificate levels during the fall 2008 Trimester. Also recognized during the ceremony were students who were inducted into the National Honor Society.

Zack Cox Named Outstanding Student of the Year

The Tennessee Technology Center at McKenzie presents Mr. Zack Cox with the 2008 Outstanding Student of the Year Award. Mr. Cox is an HVAC Student from McKenzie, TN whom has been in the program for over a year and holds many qualities of a Student of the Year. He was also named State Skills USA HVAC winner in the spring of 2008. A cash prize and trip to Nashville were given to Mr. Cox for his accomplishments on the local level. Mr. Cox will now go on to represent TTC McKenzie at the Regional Competition in Jackson, TN on December 8^th. The winner of the Regional Competition will move on to the Statewide Competition where the winner will be awarded a new KIA automobile and will represent all 26 Tennessee Technology Centers as the first Outstanding Student Ambassador.

Technology Center Students donate food to United Neighbors Fund.

The McKenzie Technology Center Student Senate hosted a can food drive for the local United Neighbors of Carroll County. The Center had a competition among there classes to see who could raise the most cans of food for the United Neighbors with the Bio-Medical class earning top honors. The school collected over 1500 cans of food to be distributed back into Carroll County through the United Neighbors program.

SPEED Program Keeps on Moving

The SPEED Program is having great Success in the 1st year of competing at Clayhill Motorsports in Atwood currently the team sits in Fourth place in the points race. The Team is made up of Eric Essary(Driver), Shawn Collins,Kenny Brewer, Jesse James, and Brandon Schultek. The team races every Saturday and we hope to have a school night at the races in the near future.

HOD (Hydrogen on Demand) Press Conference

Three Instructors at the Tennessee Technology Center at McKenzie have developed a way to fight the high cost of gasoline. Biomedical Instructor, Donald Gearin, Automotive Instructor Dan Townsend, and Electronics Instructor, Bruce Moore have scoured the internet to find a simple, low cost, practical way for automobiles to burn hydrogen instead of air in their fuel mixture. The trio have converted the school’s truck to a hydrogen burning vehicle and increased the gas mileage by 50%.
The process involves mixing water and lye in a container, running a current through it and capturing the hydrogen gas produced. This gas is then fed into the fuel system. Hydrogen and gasoline are a much more combustive mixture than air and gasoline and the combination “tricks” the engine into using less gas but producing the same power. This is a safer process than some, because there is no storage of hydrogen gas. As soon as the current is turned off in the container, the hydrogen converts back to water. There is no volatile gas stored.
The group will be conducting classes to teach the general public how to do their own conversions. The students must have a working knowledge of wiring and automobiles and in two Saturdays, they can learn how to modify their own vehicles. The first class will be on Saturday July 19^th from 7:30-11:30 am and again on August 2^nd. “I am proud of the effort that went into their work. Two Bio-Med students pass CET exam

Two students in the BioMedical Electronics Technology program at the Tennessee Technology Center at McKenzie recently passed the Certified Electronics Technician exam.

The students are Kelly Guest of Milan, and Brian Laderman of Martin. Instructor Donald Gearin is recently certified to give the exam.

The TTC-McKenzie is a testing site authorized by the Electronics Technicians Association for this exam. These two successfully completed the associate level of the four-part exam, which is for an electronics technician or students with less than two years of combined work and/or electronics training.

“This lets potential employers know that the student who has passed this exam has been thoroughly trained and can demonstrate professional proficiency,” explained Exam administrator Donald Gearin.
