Community Service

Community Service coupled with Hands On Training is a WIN WIN for everyone involved! TCAT McKenzie Industrial Maintenance students, along with their instructor Bob Donald and Assistant Instructor Garry Barnhill, installed a power grid for the City of McKenzie’s Southern Fried and Sweet Tea Festival. The festival is being held August 19th and 20th on the square in McKenzie. There will be music, vendors, food, and a plethora of events. With the additional lighting, concessions, music, vendors, etc., the added power panel and meter base ensures there will be enough outlets to power these additions.
The students involved with the project were Tyler Holt, Blake Cobb, Trevor Stout, David Capps and Isaiah Croom.

TCAT MCKENZIE HIRES NEW INSTRUCTOR

TCAT McKenzie is proud to welcome the new Welding Technology instructor, Mr. David Earley.  David is taking the place of Mr. Jimmy Kee, who is moving to East TN to head up a new welding program at TCAT-Elizabethton.

David is a native of Michigan.  He attended Algomac High School until his sophomore year, after which he was home schooled.

David and his family moved to TN in 1989, where they started a family business.  After closing the business, David worked at various places, including Plumley and Atlantic Homes.  When Atlantic Homes burned, David started his own landscaping business, which he ran successfully for 14 years.  When the housing market declined, David decided to go to school.  He enrolled in TCAT-Jackson under Mr. Phillip Cranford.  While there, he was nominated for Outstanding Student of the Year and graduated with honors.

Since graduating, David has worked in various capacities in welding.  He has taught welding, substituting many times at TCAT-Jackson (Lexington campus) and traveled extensively while working for H & M Construction.  He moved up the ranks from welding to foreman, shop foreman, welding superintendent, and now, welding instructor.

David and his wife currently reside in McKenzie.   We are honored to have him join the staff at TCAT-McKenzie.

TN College of Applied Technology Food Drive

TN College of Applied Technology at McKenzie hosted the annual food drive for the local United Neighbors of Carroll County.  The school held a competition between classes to see who could raise the most cans.  For the second year, the Heating, Ventilation, Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration class, along with their instructor Terry Wilson, were the winners with a total of 117.96 cans per student, which totals approximately 2713 cans.  Second place went to the Computer Information Technology class, who raised a total of 93.09 cans per student (approximately 1769 cans). Third place went to the Administrative Office Technology class with a total of 75.59 cans per student (approximately 1663 cans).  The overall number of cans raised this year was 8198, which exceeded last year’s total by approximately 2900! The food will be distributed back into the Carroll County community through the United Neighbors program.

TCAT-McKenzie would like to thank all the classes and instructors for their participation. We are extremely proud of the students, faculty and staff for their help in making this year’s food drive the most successful one yet!

TCAT McKenzie helps with 2nd Harvest Food Bank

TN College of Applied Technology at McKenzie had 39 students volunteer to help with the Mobile Food Pantry in Greenfield on September 30th.  The event was sponsored by Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee and Sacks Thrift Avenue/Sacks Food Pantry.   16 of the 39 students were TNPromise students and were able to earn 4 of the 8 community service hours needed to maintain their TNPromise scholarship.

Once there, the students were split into two groups.  Group 1 helped to unload the truck and organize the food items, while Group 2 assisted in packing the food and cleaning up afterwards.
Second Harvest has a network of over 450 Partner Agencies working together to feed hungry men, women and children throughout our 46-county service area. Second Harvest collects, sorts and distributes food and personal care products to over 450 partner agencies throughout 46 Middle and West Tennessee counties.

The organizers and the community were grateful to the students for all their help and were thankful to TCAT-McKenzie for allowing the students to take time out from their classes to volunteer.
